George Mason to Robert Carter (August 10, 1791)

Guston-Hall August 10th. 1791.
DEAR SIR
I this Day received your Favour of the 1st. Inst. and am sorry it is not in my Power, with any Degree of Convenience, to act on the Subject you mention. I am grown old & infirm, and find Business grow [s] fatigueing & irksome to me, nor am I so able to transact any Business, which requires much Investigation, even to my own Satisfaction, as I have formerly been. I am besides obliged to go to Richmond this Fall, and have a good deal of Business to prepare, previous to my going thither; and none of my Sons at Home with me, to assist me. These Considerations I hope will convince you, that it is not Want of Inclination to oblige you, which induces me to decline acting as a Referee between you & the Representatives of the late Mrs. Lowndes. I am, dear Sir, Your most obdt. Sert.
