[Footnotes as included or written by Farrand]
  • 1 After the manuscript of this work was in the printers' hands, the editor was privileged, through the courtesy of Mrs. S. E. Johnson Hudson of Stratford, Connecticut, to examine the diary of her great-grandfather, William Samuel Johnson. The "memoranda" amount to little more than a line each day. Though it was too late to incorporate them in the text, the extracts here given seemed to be of sufficient importance to warrant their insertion as a supplement to this appendix.
