George Mason to John Harvie (December 10, 1785)

Gunston-Hall Decemr. 10th. 1785.
[DEAR SIR]
Colo. Harvey will see, by the State of the Warrants & Entries on the other Side, & by the Surveys corresponding with them in the Land Office, that there was a Mistake made in entering G Mason's Warrant No. 6, in making the Entry 50 Acres short of the Quantity; the sd. Warrant being for 4,550 Acres, & the Entry being made for only 4,500 Acres; according to which Entry a Survey has been made, & return'd to the Land-Office, for only 4,500 Acres upon the sd. Warrant No. 6.—so that G Mason has now a Land Warrant due to him for fifty Acres of Land, under the Act of Assembly giving a Right to exchange Warrants &c. so as may best answer the Purpose of the Party. If this Warrant had been fully entered, & surveyed 50 Acres short, G Mason wou'd have had a Right [to] a new Warrant for the Deficiency; a fortiori has he a Right to it, where the Warrant has been both entered & surveyed short. This Matter wou'd have been sufficiently apparent only upon comparing the Warrant No. 6. with the Survey which has been return'd on it; but to prevent all Doubt, and to save Colo. Harvey the Trouble of tedious Examination, G Mason has stated all his Warrants Entries &c, on the other Side; to explain the Matter at one View. The Warrant No. 5. for 3,000 Acres, & the Warrant No. 10. for 2,000 Acres, being located in a different Place from the others, & exchanged with John May (for Lands upon Panther Creek) have not yet been surveyed. The Warrant now due to G Mason for fifty Acres of Land wou'd have been too trifling to trouble Colo. Harvey with; only that G Mason is in immediate Want of a small Warrant (for which Purpose this will answer) to cover a valuable little bit of vacant Land lately discovered, adjoining some of his own Lands upon Potomack; and therefore begs the Favour of Colo. Harvey to send him a Warrant for fifty Acres of Land, as above mentioned, by the Bearer, Mr. Geo: Summers; who will pay the fee for issueing it; and in so doing, he will greatly oblige his most obdt. Servt.
G Mason
NB: the Warrant No. 6. was return'd to the Deputy Register's Office, with the Survey made in Virtue of it; & no Doubt has been return'd from thence (as it ought to be) to the Land-Office in Richmond; which alone wou'd be sufficient to entitle G Mason to a Warrant for the Deficiency.
