NY Ratification Convention Debates (July 16, 1788) - New York Journal (July 21, 1788)

Among the variety of accounts received from Poughkeepsie, the following, dated on Saturday, is conceived to be the most authentic, concise, and intelligent: On Wednesday judge Hobart moved for an adjournment until the 2d of September, then to meet at Poughkeepsie. He guarded his motion on this principle, that as a change of circumstances had taken place since the election of the members, it would be proper that they should return and consult their constituents. This motion was opposed by Mr. Lansing, Mr. Bay, and Mr. Harpur, and advocated principally by Mr. Chancellor Livingston, and Mr. Duane. . . .
