To Bolling Stark (February 21, 1786)

Gunston-Hall Febry. 21st: 1786.

DEAR SIR

This will be deliver'd you by my Neighbour Mr. Archibald Johnston, eldest Brother of Colo. George Johnston decd. & one of the Devisees in his Will. The sd. Colo. George Johnston was, very early in the late War, appointed a Captain in the second Virginia Regiment, commandered by Colo. Woodford; & some time after, upon the 2d. Regiment's being put upon Continental Establishment, he was made a Major in the Continental Line, & afterwards appointed an Aid de Camp to his Excellency General Washington; in which Office he died. You will see by Colo. Johnston's will, of which the Bearer has an authenticated Copy, that his sd. Brother Mr. Archibald Johnston, & his Sister Betty Johnston (lately married to Mr. Patrick Moone) are made his residuary Legatees, &consequently have Right to whatever Military Lands Colo. Johnston wou'd have been entitled to. Upon this Business Mr. Johnston now comes to Richmond; if this Matter is adjusted in the Auditor's Office, you will oblige me exceedingly in expediting Mr. Johnston's Business; or if the Auditor's is not the proper office, in advising him where, & how, to apply.
